Young Daisy lives with her dad and grandparents in inland Australia. One day they are watching tv when the national anthem is played and Daisy asks what's "dirt by sea"? Dad explains that Australia is a big island surrounding by sea and then realises that Daisy hasn't ever seen the sea.
Dad decides to do something about this. They go to the shed where Daisy's mum's old Kombi is stored and he tells Daisy they are going on a long journey together, to see the sea!
Dirt by Sea is a fabulously fun graphic novel style picture book to read, whether you are 4 or older! Dad and Daisy set off down the road with the aim of reaching the sea, first stop is the Queensland coast.
Father and daughter play quiz games as they drive a long way to reach the seaside and by the time the reach their destination and the camp site dad needs a good long refreshing sleep. In the morning, Daisy is excited and can't wait to get to the beach. Once there they do all sorts of activities, go snorkelling and discover the wonders in the ocean, Daisy thinks it's like a movie!
The journey isn't over, they continue their travels right around the coastline and take in all the sights while learning a lot more about Australia, the ocean and themselves. They have an incredible holiday while creating memories to last a lifetime.
Dirt by Sea is a refreshingly told adventure story, with bonds between a parent and young child while enjoying the illustrations as much as the words. Young readers can trace dad and Daisy's road trip on the map and learn the where the cities and some towns are on the map and what they liked - a little refresher from the narrative.
