As the subtitle suggests, this is the children's version of The Happiest Man on Earth which was originally written for Eddie Jaku's great-grandchildren who were a little too young to understand their great-grandfather's remarkable life story.

His life story goes from being a happy and contented child in a loving family in Germany, where he was a proud citizen who loved what his country that achieved so much from the arts to the marvels of engineering.

The story unfolds in a gentle manner, explains how and why he needed to hide is identity so he  could gain a good education at a boarding school that was a nine hour train journey away from home.

In this thoughtfully and beautifully illustrated book Eddie Jaku's life unfolds as he explains his joy at skating across the frozen river to get to school in Winter, his life with a warm and loving family, his fun with friends and extended family, which all changes in instant when the Nazi's take over and changed his once happy life forever.

As his life story progresses, readers will see that all was not lost for Eddie. After liberation marrying his wonderful wife and starting a family he decided not to dwell on what happened but rather to be the happiest man on earth. With his young family he came to Australia, made a good and happy life, was instrumental with other Holocaust survivors founded the Sydney Jewish Museum in Sydney,. He has spoken to thousands of school children which has been greatly appreciated and was invited to give a TEDx talk, which is available to view on YouTube.

Although this is a dreadful time in our history, particularly for the people who suffered so much brutality for the ideals of one man, the way in which the story is told will help children to understand in a way that should not scare them, but rather be aware and know what happened for future generations.

This is a book that should be in every child's library, school and public library. The adult's book, The Happiest Man on Earth is reviewed here in schooldaysmagazine, with a link to the TEDx talk.
