by Li Chen

Published by Penguin Australia

If there is a mystery to be solved you will likely need Detective Beans, or Beans to his friends or jellybean to his mum.

This humorous has graphic novel that is suitable for readers aged 8 - 12 years of age, It begins with Beans preparing for the next day's mystery solving after he has been watching mystery movies with his best friend, Biscuit the previous night..

First, Beans wants to know who is leaving notes for him in his bedroom. He can't work out who the M.N.G. is and soon after questioning mum, he is ready to work on the case, but to do that means he needs to fetch his hat that goes with is detective style trench coat.

Beans decide to pu the first case aside because finding his missing hat is more important. He is quite adamant that he can't be a professional detective if he doesn't wear.a hat. This creatively written story takes readers on a long journey that begins with Bird who lives in the tree outside his home.

The adventure grows mysteriously as one lead follows another as he goes to Pigeon Park and Beans meets a pair of twins who he suspects because one of them is wearing a hat just like his missing one.  After questioning the pair like the master sleuth he is, Beans finds that their story is truthful.

The illustrations are delightful with cute drawings for Beans and many of the characters in the story. Another aspects we liked it that it shows readers It is a  good idea to think laterally and not always follow the direct route, to follow your nose, or rather trust your instincts. Although this is the Li Chen's first graphic novel it has potential for a follow up story. Well done.
