Formula for Success -
A word to parents and students

by Dr Dale Gerke

As the final years at school draw closer, it becomes obvious that some things are not taught. One issue that is not explained is financial intelligence. Another is perserverence, yet another is consistency.

The saddest thing is that the rules to be successful are often overlooked. It is often presumed that "experience" will overcome this deficiency, but generally this is not so. Too often, people wander through life without ever finding the key to success.

To help with this subject I will outline a simple formula that can explain the fundamental aspects of achieving success.

Success = Dream + Work + Vehicle

Let me explain this briefly.

To be successful, you have a formula that is a little unusual in that the parts required are "necessary" for success, but "not sufficient" in their own right to create success without other influences being involved. You need all three ingredients of the formula to be successful.

You need a Dream (or Desire) to motivate you to perform. It does not matter what successful person you talk to, they all have one thing in common. They had/have an intense desire to succeed or a dream to achieve their goal or objective. It is not negotiable.

Their dreams may vary, but they will all tell you the absolute importance of having a dream. The good news is that while you are young, you generally have few inhibitions regarding your dreams. The saddest part of life is that generally dreams die as you get older and as you experience the set backs in life that will inevitably come your way.

My advice is to hold onto your dream and remember that to achieve true success is a never ending journey. Enjoy the trip!

The Vehicle relates to whatever field of endeavour you want to be successful in. Your challenge in life is to develop your dream in an area that suits you, interests you or something that you enjoy or whatever makes you happy.

This all sounds simple when you are young, but the reality is that many people never find their vehicle and consequently never obtain true happiness.

While you are at school or university, your vehicle has to be your academic work. It is this path that allows you to complete your respective course and go on to a fruitful and rewarding career pathway. Much as you may think it unfair (and I do not necessarily disagree), your academic results generally will have a very large influence in your immediate "life after school". As such, you owe it to yourself to do your very best during your Year 11 and 12 exams and also during your university exams (if this is applicable to you).

The final and very necessary part of the equation for success is Work. The simple fact of life is that work is required. However, unlike the old Puritanical philosophy that you must work hard to achieve results, I believe that you can and should work smart as well as reasonably hard.

To this end, I feel that students can work smart to get good results at school and university, but if they work smart and hard, then their results at examination time can usually exceed all expectations.

Therefore, I encourage teachers, parents and students alike to seriously review successful methods of study and exam technique. It was never taught to me, but I found out how to do it by good luck. After disovering the technique, I had great academic success. I passed those ideas onto my children and they all had successful academic results at school and university. Because of this, I wrote a book to help all students in this difficult area.

I hope that you obtain the success that you deserve. Set no limits!

About the author

Dr Dale Gerke completed over 21 years of school and university education and in that time, had both success and failure with exams. Initially, Dale found studying for exams difficult and the consequent results reflected that.

However, after about two years of university education, Dale developed an exam technique that completely revolutionised the appropriate study approach. Dale’s subsequent results were generally credit and distinction ratings (and certainly there were no more failures).

Dale Gerke's book, How to Pass Exams Easily – by Working Smarter not Harder outlines the study and exam techniques that Dale developed and explains how you can also pass exams easily. It also gives you a few hints that could make your life, in general, a lot easier. You can buy a copy by clicking here.

The testimonials from students who have used his techniques have been outstanding.
