Three Year, $120,000 pilot subsidy program available for school excursions into Outback Queensland

Young Queenslanders are now able to explore the spectacular outback under a new pilot program launched by Tourism, Manufacturing and Small Business Minister Jan Jarratt.

The three-year, $120,000 pilot will be administered by Tourism Queensland. $40,000 has been allocated per year, with any unused funds to be rolled into the following year's allocations.

The three-year Outback Education Tour Subsidy Scheme, offers between $50 to $130 subsidy per students in Years 6 and 7 who are heading inland for a school excursion.

"We want more youngsters adventuring into the State's outback to learn about its place in our past, our present and future as part of annual curriculum," Ms Jarratt said.

"We want classrooms to visit places like Barcaldine to learn about the Tree of Knowledge, Carnarvon Gorge and the culture of the Karingbal Bidjara country, and to walk in the giant footsteps of dinosaurs that once roamed Richmond and Winton.

"Whether it's learning about the flying kangaroo or our cattle country, we want young people to be proud Queenslanders who value the outback.

"This program is an incentive for schools and school communities to get young people learning in the outdoor classroom and to experience some amazing sights, sounds and people of our home State.

"Outback Queenslanders are famous for their friendliness and hospitality and will no doubt welcome young explorers, making their visit one to remember.

Tourism Queensland already offers a range of Queensland outback safaris to assist schools planning their excursions.

Jan Jarratt said she encourages all Year 6 and 7 teachers to download Queensland's Outback Education handbook for more information and to start planning your outback adventure."

Education Minister Cameron Dick said it was an excellent opportunity for students to enjoy a hands-on learning experience.

"School excursions are an important part of the school curriculum and this scheme is an opportunity for kids to get out of the classroom and experience first-hand the history and environment of our great State," Mr Dick said.

"I am sure some of the invaluable learning experiences students will have will stay with them forever."

Queensland's Outback Education Handbook was developed in 2009 in partnership with the Outback Queensland Tourism Association. It includes comprehensive information and ideas for teachers wanting to develop lesson plans and travel itineraries for school excursions.
